What I teach
I am currently taking on students for instruction in both Music Theory and Composition, where we’ll focus on the underlying concepts that build music such as theory and history, and for composition students, how to use these tools to effectively write music. I cover many different topics in music theory including intervals and scales, tonal centers, phrases and cadences, modulations, modes, texture, complex meters and rhythms, and many other important musical topics not listed here. I also cover music history and different genres of music from a theory perspective. For composition I help students employ these elements as tools for composing music for specific purposes, genres, and ensembles of varying sizes and types.
How I Teach
Students meet weekly to discuss varied topics in music theory and/or composition and get assignments accordingly, such as listening assignments, commentary on certain lessons, and music writing. Composition students also get projects and compose music with the intention of completing specific lesson material in a practical context, often within an overall framework that they choose (writing certain genres, certain instrumentation, etc.) Get in contact with me to increase your musical acuity and to write music with a refined understanding.
